Experience report: Running in water with @LiquidGymOttawa
Posted In: Running February 6th, 2017 divider No Comments »So I got to check out LiquidGym Ottawa recently and I was in for a treat. To be honest, I had no idea what I was getting myself into. All I had ever done really was some water running with a belt on and some aqua aerobics…
It’s billed as an 8,000 sq. ft. one-of-a-kind complex in Bells Corners specializing in hydrotherapy and hydrotraining. They are focused on innovation in rehab and they have two major niches: The older clientele and athletes.
So you show up with shorts and get in the water. I won’t lie, it was quite different. I was warm instantly (I run hot) and it’s harder to cool down since you’re in the water. And the water is warm-ish.
You get on the treadmill and start the belt. Then you’re off and running. And then if you’re adventurous, you start the jets straight at you. It took a few minutes to get the hang of it and then felt like I was almost running in a groove. I did some sprints and I was really pushing the pace. And my heart rate felt it. But again, nice and easy on the body.
It’s pretty cool as they have underwater cameras so you can see your form as you run. I would think it’s great for a change of pace, to increase mileage or to rehab from injuries. A different experience to incorporate into your running routine while being very gentle on the body.
I even ran on the AlterG Anti-Gravity Treadmill after. Another different but very cool experience. It’s almost like you’re in space (NASA uses it) and weightless. And you can get some good speed going too!
You can check them out at liquidgym.ca. They have all kinds of packages so people can use their facilities. And great customer service too!
