Wanna look good doing something?

Do your some hard work behind closed doors. And prepare to feel silly!

The old adage still works: practice, practice, practice.  But it’s not always easy to suck at something in public, trust me I know. You usually have to turn off the ego in order to take your game to the next level, whether it’s running, tennis or public speaking.

I remember when I really started on my ChiRunning technique after my course in California. Boy must have I looked silly!

But those months of putting my ego aside and concentrating on technique paid off. I improved as a runner tremendously and I haven’t been injured in years. I remember some weird looks from people when I started and I would literally stop every block or two to restart the forward fall.

Another great way to start looking good is to look at yourself in the mirror or on camera when you’re doing your activity of choice. Instant feedback is critical so you don’t pick up bad habits. It probably won’t be fun when you break it down but it should be full of hints on where you can improve.

One of the reasons Wayne Gretzky or Tiger Woods look good doing what they do is the fact they spent countless days perfecting their craft. And then some more.

So basically what I’m saying that you will probably have to look and feel silly if you want to improve at something, whether it be running or cricket. But it’s worth it in the end.

Good luck with that!

Here’s a cool article from Alex Hutchison in the Globe & Mail about drafting. Even if you’re not Lance (and you don’t want to be these days), you can do it!

Who said breaking wind was no fun?!?
