Some advice and book recommendations for marketing/PR college grads!

Like last year, I was invited by my friend Thom Kearney to come to talk about my career and give some advice to these aspiring business folks from Algonquin College. I find it hard to say no and it’s not just because

My major point is your career is not a straight line but rather some zig zags that take you in many different directions. I also gave them some tips that served me well throughout my 15 years or so in the “real world”.

They included reaching out to different people for help, not being afraid of being themselves and most importantly following your passion. I also made the point that keeping up with Jones’ when it comes to learning and technology is key these days.

Here are four authors and books who I suggested:

  1. The book of business awesome by @unmarketing: Scott Stratten bring his humour to make a point that being awesome and standing out in this pretty grey world will go a long way. And it’s usually not very costly to do so.
  2. Thank You Economy @garyvee: Gary Vaynerchuk is another mentor, with other great books like Crush It and Jab, Jab, Jab, Right Hook (which currently near the top of the list). He took his Dad’s liquor store and turned his passion for wine and sales into a multi-million dollar empire.
  3. Ctrl Alt Del by @mitchjoel: Will your job exist in 5 years? Will you be relevant? Those are the hard questions this book makes you ask yourself.
  4. 4 Hour Workweek by @TFerriss: One of the books that has changed my life, shameless promoter Timothy Ferriss makes you question everything you ever learned about business. I’m so glad he did!
I wish someone would have given me a talk like this when I was graduating from uni. But I guess that’s one of the differences between college and university. And now I’m starting to think I might have went to the wrong one…
