After years of being bombarded by the CrossFit folks (who isn’t?), I finally gave in. My friend Laura was a gracious host for an intro class at CrossFit NCR.

It was a Monday night class with all kinds of people in it. All fairly new folks, mostly young-ish folks who wanted to get into or back into shape. Fun peeps overall.

I didn’t know what to expect since there’s a lot of stuff/misinformation out there about CrossFit. I did show up early and I can tell you our class wasn’t the same as the one that came before ours.

We did about 45 minutes of air squats where the coach (Pete) gave us individual pointers, all in a progression to do a proper overhead squat. Then we did the WOD (workout of the day). About an hour or squats and mobility work.

The WOD was 18 overhead squats then 9 box jump burpees (AMRAP – as many reps as possible), all in 8 minutes. Who knew 8 minutes could feel so long, especially after my legs were pretty burned by the 200 air squats or something we did as a warm-up. I still don’t like burpees and the box jumps at the end didn’t help!

I definitely felt the burn after the class and had some DOMS (delayed on-set muscle soreness) for a few days in some spots I hadn’t paid much attention to recently.

I was pleased with the instruction and the attention. It was a cool atmosphere where competition and camaraderie could co-exist. And like all good drug dealers, the first class is free!

Will I join he cult? Probably not anytime soon. But I enjoyed the experience and I can definitely see myself dropping in from time to time.
