I listened to another great book during a recent work trip. This book, Grain Brain by David Perlmutter, M.D, has been a pretty popular one so I wanted to check it out for myself.

Dr. Perlmutter is a neurologist and dives through the medical literature to make a strong case for the fact carbs are destroying our brains. I don’t think  carbs are pure evil but this book really opened my mind about the effects of refined carbs (think sugar and flour).

They make the point that if you cook for yourself from scratch you get away from most of the evils. He also talks about the majority of folks being sensitive to gluten in one way or another. All I know from my own is that I take out refined carbs, I feel better. It’s just not easy these days when everything is done for convenience.

They talk about fruits being used sparingly in the caveman diet and being abundant now. It’s not a huge problem on its own, it’s because most folks injest their sugar in another form, usually as high fructose corn syrup, often without knowing. Since reading the book I’ve been loading up more on nuts and veggies, especially my favourite, avocadoes.

It mentions a lot of other great books I’ve read including Good calories, bad calories by Gary Taubes. There is a growing evidence that a low carb and high (good) fat is good for you and your brain. It’s slowly cementing my thinking on diet. Your brain is made up of mostly fat so it needs it to rejuvenate itself.

I know we’ve been fed the lines for so long that low fat is best and that fat makes you fat but look where it’s gotten us? More diseases and more obesity. I’m not saying to go have a pound of lard for breakfast but some healthy fats and an unprocessed diet seems to be the winner when it comes to health for you and your brain!
