Following up on my last post, where I tried to give you some knowledge to help you with this year’s goals.

Today I’m going to give you some concrete examples on how principles from the book The Power to Change Anything by Kerry Patterson, et al can help:

  1. How bad do you want it? This is basic but so important to the goal. Put reminders around the house to help you like a motivational quotes around the door to get you out more often.
  2. Do you hate running? Well if you want to enjoy running, working on the skills needed to run will help tremendously. Being or feeling lighter on your feet will make you want to put those shoes again and again. Practice helps in that regard.
  3. Do you have a support group? One of the reasons the Running Room is popular is that it provides groups for you to run with. Run with a friend or join a virtual challenge (like #31in31) to give you that extra motivation we all need from time to time…
  4. Do you have resources at your fingers tips? If you’re not a good cook, looking up recipes might help. This is one of the reasons I love Twitter since I find inspiration on there everyday. Just make sure to follow the right kind of folks.
  5. Do you have junk food in the house? Get rid of it so you don’t get tempted. Put all the odds in your favour. Just one usually means a bad ending…
  6. Take some time for yourself to help you with your goals. Take some time on the weekend to cook and plans next’s week’s activities. That way it will be easier to stick to that plan!

To make big changes, start small. If you try to change everything starting January 1st, you will most likely fail. Why not introduce a better habit every month? I’m less about resolutions and more about building better everyday habits. That makes it easier but by no means easy!

Thank you to my buddy Scotty from Nova Scotia for pointing this great article about running in the cold. This is very relevant for folks in Canada and the northern US. This article exposes some of the myths associated with the cold.

So now you have no more excuses!
