Why I’ve become more of a caveman…

It’s been a slow progression to try to get back to my childhood dream of living on a big piece of land so I can run around all day and play. Now I’m trying to use the timeless principles of the caveman to get a bit healthier these days. Let me explain…

I cook a lot more and the vast majority of my meals come from scratch so I know exactly what’s in them. And they’re mostly made of veggies, meat, nuts/seeds and healthy fats.

I try to get outside as much as I can so I can soak up some vitamin D and some fresh air. And I try to get surrounded by trees everyday, even if I don’t always succeed. Light is very important in our lifestyle and a lot of people are sabotaging their sleep by using their phone right before bed.

I’m getting into a habit to store my phone in another room at night so I don’t get tempted to check it when I’m up suddenly at 3am. Not easy, especially for an addict like me, but it’s coming along nicely…

I also try to move often and at low intensity. And then every once in a while do some bursts to really get the blood flowing. Walking has become one of my favourite activities. And I try to simply play as much as I can, even if it’s chasing a squirrel or play street hockey with a buddy’s kid.

I also try to ease into the day in the morning and wind down at night. And relax more than I used to, especially if it’s off the grid and unplugged. But I’m not a saint, I’ll watch comedy specials or documentaries on Netflix from time to time to occupy the mind…

I’m paying a lot more attention to my sleep, not just quantity but also quality. I know I’m cheating since I’m using a fitness tracker to do so but I don’t have much a choice.

We don’t realize how much the environment has an impact our health but the cool thing is that most of the time our environment is under our control.

And the beard? That’s partly for fun and mostly because it’s easier to maintain. And it bugs my Mom!
