So how does one Eric Collard prepare for a marathon these days?

By not really preparing, of course! Some of you might think I’m just putting on a show but tomorrow’s NYC Marathon should be fun for me. It’s also just another Sunday for me, except I might be running through a new town and putting on a few more steps on the old Basis fitness band.

I used to really be stressed out by my race results and my training but now I’m more mellow and I put the emphasis on being healthy and enjoying the journey. The results aren’t what they used to be but that’s also not the plan really. To be honest, a lot of my day-to-day is business as usual. I try to fill up on veggies and clean protein, run, play hockey and do some yoga.

I find my energy level is pretty much dictated by my nutrition and my sleep. I tapered if you will by reducing my energy expenditures a bit this week and getting some Activite Release Technique work on some sore spots.

One of the biggest positives of the new “training plan” is recovery. Beacuse I’m aware, and I’m getting good sleep and nutrients I find recovery is sped up dramatically. I also don’t do many long workouts so less repetitive stress on the body. I remember cravings after races but I don’t really have crazy cravings (or crazy restrictions) these days with less reliance on simple and refined carbs.

As far as the training, I find less is more. I might be undertrained but I feel great. I’m living the UltraMental philosophy with my longest run before tomorrow in the past six months being about 23k.

I guess the proof is in/the pudding so stay tuned. My plan for tomorrow: A slow ChiRun while taking it all in and a big finish with a smile!
