Why is change so hard and scary?

After an online conversation with a friend yesterday, I went for a run to enjoy the beautiful sun and it got me thinking. Why is change so hard and scary?

As people who have known me for a while, I love to change. It makes me feel alive! I also love the looks and comments that come with it. More people thought I was crazier to quit my (permanent and good paying) job at City Hall then (to pay, train 8 months, and fly out to BC) to do Ironman Canada.

Most people love comfort and staying inside their bubble. They love their routine and get grumpy if anything bumps them out of it. I just don’t get that. Well I kinda get it since it’s familiar and easy. But often these same people ask themselves why they’re stuck in a rut. Or worse yet, complain about their situation.

I remember when I was first exposed to Lululemon, I thought they were crazy people. These people have nice clothes (mostly because of the butt-bra I assumed) but the manifesto they believe in? That’s crazy! When I signed on as an Ambassador a few months back, that very manifesto is what sealed the deal for me. It gets people out of their comfort zone and change so you can grow on a daily basis. Some people say it’s a cult. Well if it is, I want in! I’d rather be thought of as a “crazy” then simply sleepwalking through life.

The same can be said about the BodyByVi community. Yes, it might seem a bit different at first (different business model, non-traditional methods, etc) but the kind of people that it attracts are “crazies” like me it seems. I find it very motivating to hang out and chat with people who love to do scary stuff and take control of their own destiny. It makes me want to become a better and bigger person.

This conversation is not done but for now I will leave you with some great quotes I found quite interesting (and quite true):

It is not the strongest of the species that survive, nor the most intelligent, but the one most responsive to change.
~Charles Darwin

Change is inevitable – except from a vending machine.

  1. Just reading this raised my anxiety level lol. I am one of those who are slowly coming to embrace change…though it always scared me when I was younger, because it was out of my control. Now I get to choose what changes I make and so the whole idea of change is becoming more and more exciting for me. I admire people who dont’ have that fear of change…I truly do think their quality of life is on a whole other level. So be crazy!! :) great post!

Thank you. Change is like working out I guess, the more you do it, the easier it gets! I want to be an agent of change!

Love it! I love change too! There is no growth without it. When change is scary turn it into excitement. I am glad you changed your mind about LULU :)

Change = Hard & Scary…NOPE !! It all depends on the attitude you have on the situation ! If you think the change will be hard and scary it will be! If you think it will be Fantastic …it will ! La peur de l’inconnue…fait peur aux gens…il faut savoir oser ! It spices up your life ! I do agree that it make’s you feel ALIVE !

Don’t be afraid to make a change…take action & make it happen ! Spice it up !

  4. Couldn’t agree more – change is the spice of life! Yes it is scary but once you change – it’s addictive! Kinda like me and skydiving, I was so scared to do it but now I love it!! :) Great post.
